How do I use Rooster Money with IFTTT?

Updated over a week ago

IFTTT (which stands for ‘If This, Then That’) is a platform that connects different services together to make useful and fun things happen automatically.

There are 14 million users registered with the platform and there are over 75 million ‘Applets’ that you could connect to.

An ‘Applet’ connects two or more apps or devices together. It lets you do something that those apps or devices couldn’t do on their own! For example, you may want to automatically turn your lights on at sunset or automatically order a pizza when it rains - there’s an applet for that! And if you can’t find one for you, you can create it yourself.

IFTTT integrations can be set up via their website, or you can install the IFTTT app from the App Store or Play Store and create them from your device.

How to connect your Rooster account with IFTTT

The Rooster Money integration with IFTTT is only available for families on the Rooster PLUS subscription. You can follow these steps to connect your account with IFTTT:

  1. Search for the Rooster Money service or go straight to our page here

  2. Click ‘Connect’

  3. Enter your Rooster Money account login details to authenticate your account

  4. If you are a Rooster Card family, you will be required to enter the CVV for one of your children’s cards to authenticate your real money account

  5. Once you authenticate your account, you will be taken back to our IFTTT page

How to connect to a Rooster applet

When you are on our RoosterMoney IFTTT webpage, we have listed all the applets we've created which you can choose to connect to. All you have to do is:

  1. Click on the applet you want to connect to

  2. You will be taken to the applet page on IFTTT

  3. Tap on ‘Connect’

  4. You’ll be taken to the applet settings when you can choose which child you want to set the applet up for, amongst other things

  5. Click ‘Save’ and the applet is set up

Although we’ve created a whole host of applets for you to choose from, the beauty of IFTTT is all of the different applets you can make yourself!

A few parents in the past have asked for a way to do quick boosts from their device dash. With IFTTT you can set up just that! We’re going to use this as an example of how to create your own applet.

What are we creating:

An applet that lets you tap a button from a widget on your phone’s dashboard to quickly boost a child a set amount.

If This

Choose the service you want to trigger an action from. For our example, we will select ‘Button widget’ as your ‘If This’ service.

Choose a trigger

Select a trigger for your ‘If This’. So for our example, we’ll choose ‘Button press’.

Then That

Once you’ve set up your ‘If This’ you can next choose your ‘Then That’. For this example, you would choose Rooster Money as your ‘Then That’ service.

Choose an action

You can choose what action you want to occur when the ‘If This’ trigger happens. So when you push the button, what action do you want to occur?

With Rooster Money you can choose from the following options:

  1. Boost a child

  2. Remove money from a child’s account

  3. Transfer money from one pot to another

For our example, we will select ‘Boost’. Now you will need to add in some details so we know where the boost is going and for how much.

Complete action fields

Once you’ve chosen your action, you will be asked to fill out some details for your ‘If This, Then That’ applet.

For our example, this includes:

  1. The amount you want to Boost

  2. The child you want the action to occur for

  3. The Pots you want this action to complete for

  4. You can also choose a description to show in the transaction history.

Once you’ve set up all the details, you can click ‘Create action’ where you’ll be taken to a screen summarising your applet. Click ‘Continue’.

Review and finish

Choose the title for your applet and click ‘Finish’ to create your very own applet!

It’s important to note for the applet we’ve created in the example to work, you will need to install the IFTTT app on the device you want to complete the action from, and then login with your IFTTT account details. That’s because the ‘Button widget’ is an IFTTT service and creates a widget on your device via their app. However, if you want to create an applet between Fitbit and Rooster Money for example, you’d be fine creating this from a computer.

How to disconnect from an applet or service on IFTTT

Click on your profile avatar in the top right corner and select ‘My services’. From there you’ll get a list of all the services you are connected to.

When you click on the Service, you’ll be taken to their IFTTT page.

Disconnecting from an applet

On the service’s page, you will see the applets you are connected to at the top of the page.

Just click on the applet then tap on ‘Connected’ to disconnect from the applet.

Disconnecting from the service

If you want to disconnect from the service altogether, tap on ‘Settings’ in the top right. You will see ‘Remove [service name]’ underneath ‘Account Info’.

Click on that and follow the prompts to disconnect from the service.
